Garforth Town suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at league champions Worksop Town on Saturday. The early signs were ominous as the hosts took an early lead, but Garforth have had a new found resilience of late and the end result was very creditable.

2019-04-20   Police Raid in Garforth

The police have carried out a raid on an undisclosed address in Garforth as part of an ongoing investigation into money laundering. One person was arrested on suspicion of money laundering, possessing a class B drug and possessing a prohibited article.

A 6 year old girl is raising money for her local gymnastics club and helping children with cancer by donating her long locks to the Little Princess Trust on Friday 26th April. Tabitha Ellis is a member of The Sherburn Community Gymnastics Club 


2019-04-19   A Bonkers Evening

Over £2,500 was raised for Sherburn High School last week after the huge success of the FOSH’s (Friends of Sherburn High’s) Bonkers Bingo event. Over 100 people attended the fundraising evening which included 6 fun games of bingo with hilarious prizes including, a giant gnome, a cardboard cutout of ‘The Rock’ and even some baked beans

2019-04-18   Kippax Couple Cycling for Prostate Cancer

Alex and Jenna Easton, from Kippax, are tackling a 145-mile fundraising tandem bike ride to Amsterdam over two days in June to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. They have already raised more than £1,700 through donations to their JustGiving page www.justgiving.com /fundraising /tandem-whites 


2019-04-17   Sherburn Library Pocket Park

The Parish Council and Sherburn Community Trust have worked together to obtain a government grant to rejuvenate the garden next to the library. The aim is to provide an area which will benefit the whole community. From now until Friday 19th April there will be a display in the library and residents are invited to leave their comments. 


2019-04-17   Growing Zone Wins Award

The Growing Zone Group in Kippax has been granted a Duke of York Community Initiative award for its “excellent work”. The Duke presented the certificate to Growing Zone’s placement worker Daniel Moran at a ceremony in Catterick earlier this month. The scheme on Gibson Lane is an allotment garden project for children and adults with special needs, which helps build confidence.

Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police have issued the list of speed camera locations to be aware of this week. One of the ten sites will be the A656 Ridge Road at Ledston. 


2019-04-16   Council U-turn on Discounts

Leeds City Council have suspended plans to remove Leeds Card admission discount at several visitor attractions including Lotherton Hall, Temple Newsam Home Farm and Tropical World following a backlash from customers. Existing discounts for Leeds Card and Breeze Card holders will continue while further consultation is carried out.

2019-04-15   Miners’ Home Win

Garforth Town beat Goole AFC 2-0 on Saturday. The Miners scored in each half through goals from Sam Barker and Joe Colley to beat relegation threatened Goole. The result puts Garforth back on track to finish the season strongly, while Goole still have a three-way battle with Harrogate Railway and Hall Road Rangers to avoid the drop.

2019-04-14   Garforth Leg Club

A new club has been created in Garforth to assist people living with leg related problems. The club will meet every Wednesday morning from 10am to noon at the NET offices in Dover Street East Garforth. The club offers holistic treatment on a drop in basis and is manned by volunteers and nurses.

2019-04-13   Jack Raises Awareness of Autism

Garforth Academy student Jake Gill has organised a coffee morning that has raised £200 for the National Autistic Society. Fourteen year old Jack was diagnosed with autism aged twelve and is seeking to raise awareness of the condition. 


2019-04-12   Facecloth Puppies

Alan and Amanda Hartley from Kippax have been raising funds for Dogs for Good by creating toy puppies out of facecloths, buttons and bows. They have been selling the facecloth puppies for donations of around £2.50 and raised nearly £700 donated. They are now appealing for other local dog lovers to help them reach their target of £1,000 at uk.virginmoneygiving.com /BarkingMadLeeds . Dogs for Good trains dogs to help children and adults with all sorts of challenges 


2019-04-12   Arson Attack on Hayrick

Police are investigating an arson attack on a hayrick on Swillington Lane on 31st March. A group of youths were seen running away between 6pm and 6.30pm. Firefighters from Garforth, Killingbeck and Hunslet attended the scene. The police are appealing for witnesses

Garforth Amateur Dramatic Society’s AGM will take place at the Gaping Goose on 29th April at 7.30pm. Everyone is invited to come and air their ideas and views. 


2019-04-11   Creative Site Given Green Light

A decision by planners to approve a large-scale extension to the film and TV production facility at a former RAF base near Tadcaster could create the region’s largest “park” for creative industries. Its owner, the Garforth-based developer Makin Enterprises, wants to build a “flagship HQ-style” building on the site and convert aircraft existing hangars into more space for film sets. They say the Church Fenton site could eventually support 1,800 permanent, skilled jobs in the creative and digital sector.

North Yorkshire Police have received a number of reports from residents who have received a telephone call from someone claiming to be from Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC). The victim is told there is an outstanding tax bill against their name which must be paid immediately.. Often they will claim to have been to court and have instructed bailiffs to attend the victim’s home to settle the debt.

2019-04-07   Social Crafts Session

On Monday 8th April from 1.30-2.30pm Garforth Social is having a Tour de Yorkshire crafting session at Garforth Library. Garforth Social is usually aimed at adults, but as it's the Easter break children can also enjoy some crafting fun. They will be making bunting, flags and sun catchers, which can either be taken home or left with the library to decorate their windows come Tour de Yorkshire weekend. No need to book, just turn up

Garforth were disappointingly beaten 3-0 away to lowly Albion Sports in the NCE premier league. Albion Sports struck within 15 seconds set them on the way to victory. 


2019-04-06   Tour de Yorkshire Timetable

The men’s second stage of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire passes through Kippax at 1538 and through Garforth at 1543 on Friday 3rd May. The ladies race stage one follows the same route in the morning and passes through Kippax at 1005 and Garforth at 1011

Access for disabled passengers at Garforth station is to be improved as part of a £300m Government Access for All package. The work will be completed by March 2024.

Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams has quit as junior Wales Office minister over the prime minister's decision to turn to Jeremy Corbyn to try to get a Brexit deal through Parliament, saying he believed the UK would have coped with a "managed no-deal".

2019-04-01   A Creditable Draw

Garforth Town drew 0-0 at home to Handsworth Parramore on Saturday. There were no goals, but plenty of determination as Town held eighth-place Handsworth. It was a creditable result against a side that has had the better of the last seven meetings, and a point which takes the Miners up to 15th in the table.

Concern over plans for a traveller’s pitch in Kippax has attracted 770 letters of objection. The allotment on Sandgate Terrace in Kippax is subject to an application to provide space for one caravan, plus a dayroom, mobile home and parking space.

Hundreds of Leeds residents took part in the UK’s recent annual Learn to Play Day event organised by the charity Music for All. People of all ages visited music venues, schools, and stores across the area, to try their hand at a new skill and take advantage of the free music lessons available. Participating venues included Garforth Brass Band at Garforth Miners Welfare Hall

The Odeon Luxe complex at Thorpe Park will open on Friday 12th April. It will feature 10 screens, 971 seats and create 80 new jobs. Through to 31st May tickets will be £5 before 5pm on Monday to Friday and £10.50 at peak times with children from £7.50

2019-03-25   New CCTV for Village

Sherburn will shortly see the installation of brand new CCTV cameras in the village centre and other areas such as Eversley Park and the Fairways Recreational ground. The new system is far more advance, providing a much better image quality due to high definition lenses. It has been designed so it can be expanded to additional areas in the village.

Lotherton Hall is hosting a Mad Hatter of an Easter from Saturday 30th March to Sunday 28th April with four weeks of family fun. Get lost in the Wonderland Village, follow the white rabbit’s trail and get creative with kooky crafts. Garforth Town dug in to record a great 1-0 win over visitors Barton Town and end a dismal spell of form. Mark Simpsons' first half penalty was enough to seal the win in a game that saw a lengthy second half stoppage due to a Barton injury.

2019-03-23   Road Closure to Impact Garforth Buses

Bus users in Garforth have been warned to expect disruption to services 19 and 19A from 11am on 31st March to 5am the following day during the temporary closure of Lidgett Lane. Services will be diverted via Ninelands Lane and Church Lane 


2019-03-22   Police Advise on Local Burglaries

West Yorkshire Police have posted advice on Facebook about how to reduce the risk of being a victim for anyone worried about the spate of burglaries and car crime in the Kippax area. They also revealed that an officer had arrested a man in the area for burglary on Tuesday

2019-03-21   Man Dies in Sherburn Accident

A 56-year-old man died after his car mounted the pavement and struck bollards and a stationary vehicle in Sherburn at about 8.20pm on Saturday, 16th March. The black Volvo V50 went on to the pavement on Low Street outside the Spar shop. The driver was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene. 


2019-03-20   Speed Cameras Catch 15

15 cars were caught driving over the speed limit in Garforth during a police operation on Tuesday morning on Ninelands Lane and Derwent Avenue. This action was due to a number of complaints received from local residents. 


2019-03-20   Nellie’s Tree Misses Out in Europe

The winner of the European Tree of the Year 2019 was The Almond Tree of the Snowy Hill in Pecs, Hungary. Nellie’s tree finished ninth out of fifteen entries with 14,408 votes. The winner was announced at an Award Ceremony in the European Parliament last night

Sherburn bus manufacturer Optare has won the Excellent in Technology Award at the recent London Transport Awards for its Metrodecker EV vehicle, which is the world’s first truly zero emission battery electric double deck bus.

Sherburn Community Association are leading a litter pick at 10am on Saturday 30th March 2019. It will start and finish at the Spar in Sherburn. The Spar are supporting this event and are offering a free drink to volunteers who take part in the litter pick. All volunteers are welcome. Please come and help

2019-03-16   Fire Crews Rescue Trapped Horse

Fire crews were called out in Wednesday’s windy weather to rescue a horse trapped under a tree on Swillington Lane. Jager the horse was successfully released and had only minor injuries 


2019-03-15   Timber at Lotherton Hall

The strong winds accompanying Storm Gareth on Wednesday led to a tree falling onto a path near to the Hall at Lotherton Hall. No damage was caused to the building and council staff made the site safe. 


2019-03-15   Garforth Conman Sentenced

Garforth man Christopher Bundza, aged 54 appeared in court after purporting to sell tickets to a Justin Bieber concert that he never had. He duped several members of the public by claiming he had tickets for the 2016 concert in Sheffield, taking the money but never producing the tickets. He appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday to be sentenced for three counts of fraud worth £700. Bundza was jailed for nine months but the jail term was suspended for a period of 18 months. He was also ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work

Explore Learning will be at Garforth Library on Wednesday 13th March from 4pm to 5pm for a fun writing workshop for 4-14 year olds. There will be tutors on hand to assist young writers in crafting their entry for Explore Learning's National Young Writers Competition which has great prizes including a trip to Disneyland and £500 worth of books for the winner's school library.

2019-03-12   Arts Live at the Academy

A triple-bill folk gig featuring Roots Alive, Leeds Folk Fiddle Group and the Arts Live Folk Band takes place at Garforth Academy on Saturday 23rd March from 1pm to 4pm. Tickets are £5 (under 12s go free) from Garforth Academy reception, Garforth Library and the SPT shop, also on the door. Doors open 1pm and the music starts at 1.30pm 


2019-03-12   Roadworks Ahead

Yorkshire Water will be carrying out essential works on the night of 12th March from 7pm to 7am on 13th March at the junction of Aberford Road, Main Street, Wakefield Road and Barwick Road. Temporary multiway lights will be in use during the works

2019-03-11   Fingers Crossed for Nellie’s Tree

Voting for the European Tree of the Year Competition closed on 28th February. Nellie’s Tree is the English entry for Tree of the Year. The results will be announced at the Award Ceremony in Brussels, the 19th March, where the winners will be awarded. 


2019-03-10   Miners Suffer Away Defeat

The miners lost by 3-1 away at Staveley on Saturday. Staveley fired in two early goals, leaving Garforth with a mountain to climb. Dan Williams’ goal gave the Miners hope until a sucker-punch from the home side stopped them in their tracks 


2019-03-10   Getting Ready for TDY

Communities are being challenged to create the most dazzling visual spectacular yet for the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire. This year’s cycle race route will pass through 151 villages, towns and cities between May 2 and May 5, with images of Yorkshire beamed to 190 countries worldwide. In 2018 Garforth local Samantha Whitley was awarded the Spirit of Le Tour prize for her tireless work in the community and Kippax was named Best Dressed Village of the Tour de Yorkshire. 


2019-03-09   Charlie’s Ball

Rachel Cheshire, from Monk Fryston is busy putting the finishing touches to a charity ball that she is staging in aid of the Leeds-based Charlies-Angel-Centre Foundation, which was founded in 2012 by Ruth Curtis and her family after the death of little Charlie Curtis. It aims to raise awareness of the needs of bereaved parents and families. Charlie’s Ball in aid of Charlies-Angel-Centre Foundation is on Thursday March 14 at Aspire on Infirmary Street, Leeds, starting at 6.45pm, with red carpet, champagne reception, three-course dinner, cabaret, fashion show, auction and disco. Nominations are now open for the Sherburn Community Volunteer Awards 2019. Those nominated must be unpaid and classed as a volunteer, their voluntary service must be within the confines of Sherburn In Elmet and they must be able to attend the community awards presentations once again to be held at The Swan Public House Sherburn. 2019-03-08   Comic Relief Fun Day

Sherburn High School are holding a Comic Relief Day on Friday 15th March. Students can turn up in non-uniform for a £1 contribution. There will also be a Comic Relief themed quiz, Beat the Goalie, Sponge a Teacher, darts, tug of war and balloon popping, all for a small fee

Train operator Northern's six-carriage long services in and out of Leeds station have been delayed by two years because longer platforms at Leeds will not be ready in time. But Northern still plans to start phasing in a £500m fleet of new short trains from this spring.

2019-03-07   Ginetta Unleashes its Shark

Garforth based sports and racing car manufacturer Ginetta has unveiled its new 583hp supercar at the prestigious Geneva Car Show. The all-new Akula, which is the Russian word for shark, will cost £340,000 in Britain. Production starts in 2020 and 14 of expected 20 cars produced that year have already been sold.

A new exhibition at Lotherton Hall is looking back at the last 50 years of the Hall, since it was gifted to Leeds City Council by the estate’s owner Sir Alvery Gascoigne. It is now one of Yorkshire’s most visited paid for attractions. 


2019-03-06   Couple Slam New Kippax Home

A Kippax couple Nicola and Phil Bentley say they are at “breaking point” after finding 700 defects in their brand new Persimmon Homes house. The couple claim there are 700 faults with their newly-built house and the builder has only fixed 10 per cent of the faults in ten months. The house was bought off plan and the couple were not allowed to inspect the house prior to signing the contract.

2019-03-05   Kippax Band Going to Finals

More than 50 brass bands descended on Huddersfield Town Hall at the weekend for the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships 2019. In the Third Section Kippax Brass Band took first place with Wetherby and District Silver second, with both qualifying for the National Finals which will be held in September at Cheltenham racecourse. 


2019-03-04   Councillor Fixes Path

Councillor Mel Hobson has agreed to use funds from his allowances to pay for the footpath in Cricketers Way, Sherburn to be resurfaced. The councillor has received many complaints from residents regarding the state of the footpath and issues with litter and has decided to take action. The money to pay for these repairs will come from his environmental allowances. 


2019-03-04   Brown Bin Collections Resume

Leeds City Council commences brown bin collections again this week following the annual winter break in service. If you have a brown (garden waste) bin, the service runs from March to November with collections taking place every fortnight. Exact collection dates can be determined by visiting the council website and entering your postcode,

There will be a Fairtrade coffee morning and bun sale on Friday 8th March in St Benedict’s School Hall at 10am. All welcome. 


2019-03-03   Miners Almost Fightback at Hemsworth

Garforth Town were inches away from a stunning fightback away at promotion chasing Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Saturday. The home side led 2-0 at half time and increased it further with a third halfway through the second half. Then they had a player sent off and the Miners roared back with 2 goals and a late chance, just inches wide.
